These Spaces / These Places | Cassim

ARTIST SHOWING:

  1. Zarah Cassim

Zarah Cassim graduated from the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 with a major in photography and painting.

Viewing herself in relation to the landscape, it presents a blank canvas to Cassim, a space free from error. She sees landscape as natural, raw, wild, untouched. As allowing layers of human reality to be imposed, explored and exposed within it; it is perceived as we wish.

For Cassim, the natural landscape is also a place of comfort in a world which can be overwhelming. It is a place of introspection, a place of secrets and intimacy. Where (and through which) reflections, shadows and moments can be expressed. The painted images on exhibition – intimate, personal and sensitive moments – are dark and moody, yet they hold an immersive sense of serenity in their ethereality. These moments exist as almost-imperceptible shadows, traces and memories in the landscapes, painted in layers beneath the surface.

This is her first solo exhibition.
