Alice Toich comments on contemporary social phenomena through the use of contemporary realism in painting and drawing. She applies classic rendering techniques to interrogate the nuances of social relations. Her particular exploration of the human condition investigates the human ego, mortality, memory and how online media practice exacerbates narcissism and hyper-consumerist tendencies while negating spaces for contemplating the passing of time and the eventuality of death. As such, her subjects are represented in correlation to traditional portraiture and society paintings. Influences on her work include the tensions inherent in the social and political landscapes of South Africa, being female and her history in Advertising.
Toich holds a BA degree in media and a post-graduate diploma in Painting from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. In 2013 she was accepted to attend an intensive summer workshop at Studio Escalier in Aregnton, France, under the tuition of Michelle Tully and Timothy Stotz, where she began to dabble in the techniques of academic painting. During her post-graduate studies at Michaelis she was awarded a scholarship to attend a Summer Intensive programme of study at the Grand Central Academy of Fine Art in New York City in 2014, which she attended. In 2015, Toich spent two months at Maumau Works: an artist residency program in Istanbul where she exhibited with two other visual artists, from Norway and Iran. Later in the year she co-curated a group show titled ‘Death Speaks’ with fellow artists Dale Washansky and Suzanne Duncan which investigated the disappearance of spaces used for contemplating human mortality in contemporary society. In 2016, Alice was chosen to exhibit in the Regional Finals Group show for Barclays L'Atelier.
