Fanie Buys is an irreverent artist and graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art (2017). He was born in Gansbaai and grew up along the Garden Route. He is currently based in Cape Town.
His recognisable subjects, from Drake to Little Edie, Jimi Hendrix to Rafael Nadal (and always Princess Di) are painted with a sense of familiarity which borders on intimacy, in what he describes as the “moer net school of painting”.
Buys’s painterly depiction of popular culture imagery references the subjectivity through which we view not only other people but ourselves. Our celebrity crushes are both an inspiration as well as a tool which Buys utilises in gaining understanding of the notion of self as it fits into a larger societal structure.
His first solo exhibition opened at 99 Loop in January 2018.
